Yoga Poses for Aquarius

astrology yoga poses for... Feb 08, 2023

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) is the eleventh of the 12 signs of the zodiac. It is ruled by Uranus in modern astrology and Saturn in traditional astrology. It is associated with the air element and the root chakra.

The parts of the body associated with Aquarius are the ankles, calves, and shins.  Represented by the symbol of the water bearer, Aquarius embodies its generosity and captures the imagery of the waves.

Its ruler planet Uranus is a rebel, which gives Aquarius its idealness and desire to change the world. Aquarian energy is intuitive, spiritual, and transformative. It is a sign that is rational, intelligent, and clear.

The yoga for this sign incorporates wave like movements that flow into each other. The breath is an inseparable element of yoga for Aquarius as its rising and falling connects with the energy of waves.

If you have Aquarius in your sun, moon, or ascendant signs, the following yoga poses can be particularly helpful to practice. You can also add them to your yoga sequence if you are in Aquarius season.

4 Yoga Poses for Aquarius

1. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)

Aquarius is the sign of transition. It takes us from the old to the new, from the past to the future. Bridge pose is a pose of movement.

This pose helps awaken the senses. It helps explore the entire length of the back and its movements with attention and care. It helps clear the mind and energize the body.

There are two ways to do this pose. You can use it as a dynamic pose or a restorative pose, depending on what you need from your practice. Either way, it strengthens the back, neck, and shoulder muscles.

2. Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana)

This is a great pose to stimulate the thyroid and pituitary glands and works really well for Aquarius, as they are so intuitive. Shoulder stand is an inversion.

There are countless benefits of inversions. They reverse gravity and thereby, send more blood to the brain. It also provides a stretch to the neck and spine.

Shoulder stand stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s rest and digest response. It also boosts the immune system and decreases the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

One should be careful while getting into the pose. Continue to work on variations until you feel stable.

3. Chair Pose (Utkatasana)

Since Aquarius rules the ankles, calves, and shins, this pose is the perfect way to strengthen those parts. Chair pose strengthens and lubricates the ankle joints and ligaments. It also cultivates more stability and focus.

Also known as Fierce Pose, it builds heat in the body. It is also an integrative pose, bringing all the parts of the body together. It needs the engagement of legs, torso, and arms, all working in unison.

A deep squat, Chair pose encourages us to find our power. It helps us access our reservoir of energy. The key to making the most of this pose is through consistent practice.

4. Legs up the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)

This pose involves propping up the legs on a support so the body forms an L-shape. It helps stimulate the thyroid gland, something very useful for Aquarius, an intuitive and spiritual sign.

Legs up the wall pose has a range of benefits. It eases anxiety, headaches, and insomnia. It is calming and deeply relaxing. It also helps relieve tired legs and reduces swelling in the ankles and feet.

Before bedtime is an ideal time to practice this pose. Use cushions and blankets to make this pose even more delicious. You can also use a chair to rest your legs on instead of a wall.
