Vedic Astrology: An Ancient and Honorable Practice
Feb 15, 2024Vedic Astrology originates from ancient India, specifically the Vedas, who also gave us the teachings of yoga and ayurveda.
Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac system, which means it is 24° behind the Tropical (Western) zodiac that is typically used in the United States.
This means that in Tropical astrology, Aires season starts on March 21 and ends on April 19. However, in Sidereal astrology, Aries season is April 13 – May 14.
Unlike Tropical astrology, Vedic astrology uses the actual positions of the stars to give more intentional interpretations. Tropical astrology uses the relative positions of the planets based on the Spring Equinox.
Karma & Free Will
One of the defining features of Vedic Astrology is its emphasis on Karma and reincarnation. It teaches that our actions in past lives shape our present circumstances, and the positions of celestial bodies at the time of our birth provide insights into our karmic patterns and life's purpose.
In Vedic astrology, our birth charts represent nothing more than the environment that we created by our past life actions.
However, the most inspiring part about Vedic Astrology is that what is "meant" to be by our birth charts is not necessarily what "has" to be!
Our birth chart is a snapshot of our past life's Karma, but Karma is governed by the exercise of our FREE WILL!
The whole basis of Vedic astrology is that our choices change the course of events in our lives! Using your free will can minimize negative planetary aspects and maximize good ones.
Uses of Vedic Astrology
Vedic astrology contains all aspects of astrology. Including:
- Natal Astrology (Study of self through the birth chart)
- Mundane Astrology (Planet effects on society & general public)
- Predictive astrology (What outcome is most likely to happen next)
Vedic astrology also contains a medical system based on Ayurveda. Looking at Vedic astrology with the knowledge of Ayurveda can help time and assist in the healing and managing of illness or disease.
Remedial Measures
In Vedic astrology, following remedial actions is crucial in reducing negative planetary influences and enhancing positive energies in your life.
These remedies encompass a wide range of practices, from wearing specific gemstones to performing rituals, mantra chanting, yoga, and meditation. Each remedy addresses specific planetary imbalances and promotes harmony within oneself and with the cosmic forces.
Remember, we all have freedom of choice, and the extent and manner in which we exercise this ability determines the extent to which our lives are conditioned by past Karma and planetary influences.
These are the basic foundations of Astro Yoga. Through the guidance of an experienced Vedic astrologer like Arnelle Mitchell, you can use daily practices like yoga and meditation to minimize the negative effects of planets.
Unique Aspects of Vedic Astrology
Vedic astrology and Western astrology both share common roots in ancient astronomical observations and the desire to interpret celestial influences on human behavior.
However, there are significant differences between them in terms of techniques, interpretation, and underlying philosophy.
Zodiac System: Western astrology primarily employs the Tropical Zodiac, which is based on the position of the Sun relative to the Earth's seasons.
In contrast, Vedic astrology predominantly utilizes the Sidereal Zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars and accounts for the precession of the earth's axis. As a result, there is a slight variance in the placement of planetary positions and zodiac signs between the two systems, typically around 24°.
House System: Western astrology often employs the Placidus or Koch systems relative to the Ascendant. This typically means that you may have houses that begin in the middle of a zodiac sign.
Vedic astrology typically utilizes the Whole Sign House system, where each house corresponds to a complete sign, regardless of the Ascendant's degree.
Use of Divisional Chars: Vedic astrology uses several predictive tools to make accurate assumptions. Those tools include divisional charts (Varga charts) as well as transits. Divisional charts provide deeper insights into specific areas of life, enabling astrologers to offer more specific predictions and remedies.
Western astrology does not traditionally utilize divisional charts to the same extent as Vedic astrology. Instead, Western astrologers rely primarily on the natal chart (birth chart) and transits to interpret planetary influences and predict future events.
Mahadasha periods: Mahadasha periods are another tool that Vedic astrologers use to make accurate predictions about your life and what events are most likey to take place.
These planetary periods are a fundamental concept in Vedic astrology and are believed to have a significant impact on various aspects of a person's life, including career, relationships, health, and overall well-being. The durations of these periods are determined by the position of the Moon at the time of birth.
In Conclusion
Vedic Astrology has proven to be a beacon of wisdom and guidance, transcending cultural boundaries and evolving with the passage of time. Its timeless teachings continue to resonate with seekers of truth and can be a useful tool in maximizing one's sense of happiness and fulfillment in life.
