The Stages of a Spiritual Awakening
Nov 15, 2022A spiritual awakening is a profound shift in consciousness and awareness. It's a process of self-discovery that transcends the boundaries of the ego and opens the door to a deeper connection with the universe or a higher power. During a spiritual awakening, individuals often experience a heightened sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.
It's important to note that spiritual awakenings can be triggered by a variety of life experiences, such as a personal crisis, a near-death experience, a major life change, or simply a deep yearning for something more meaningful. Not only are there several triggers to beginning your spiritual awakening, there are several steps to the process as well.
A spiritual awakening is a deeply transformative experience that can bring about profound changes in your life.
It's important to remember that this process is highly personal, and no two awakenings are exactly alike. While the signs and symptoms mentioned here are common, they are not exhaustive, and not everyone will experience all of them.
If you find yourself going through a spiritual awakening, it's essential to embrace the journey with an open heart and mind. Seek guidance and support from spiritual teachers, mentors, or therapists who can provide insight and help you navigate the challenges that may arise.
Here are the 7 stages of a spiritual awakening
1. The Awakening
This is the phase one is awakened and may feel disoriented or confused. You are dissociating, questioning, and feeling dissatisfied with things you once accepted.
You may become more attuned to your surroundings, noticing the beauty and complexity of the world in a way you hadn't before. Your intuition may become sharper and more reliable.
You might start trusting your gut feelings and inner guidance more, as they often lead you in the right direction on your spiritual journey.
2. The Abyss
As you experience a deeper connection with your inner self, material possessions and superficial pursuits may lose their appeal. You begin to seek fulfillment in more meaningful, soul-nourishing endeavors.
You might lose relationships, come to be alone, and end an old identity. And it is then that you are forced to grow. At some point, you get to your lowest.
This is the most challenging phase. It is when you feel like you are sinking. This happens because the soul is shedding everything that is stagnant. It is getting rid of the ego.
Questions about the meaning of life, your purpose, and the nature of reality become central to your thoughts. You may seek answers through philosophy, spirituality, or various wisdom traditions.
3. The Sponge
Life as you knew it has been turned upside down and now you’re receptive to the new thing that is coming your way. Individuals often experience profound insights and learnings that can have a significant impact on their lives. These lessons can vary widely from person to person, as the nature of a spiritual awakening is deeply personal.
It's important to note that these lessons can take time to fully integrate into one's life, and the journey of a spiritual awakening is ongoing.
4. The Satoru Self
The word Satori is one that comes from Japanese Buddhism. It can be broadly translated to mean ‘comprehension’ and is the term for awakening. This is the stage after the recognition of your lessons.
You move from acknowledging to honoring. You realize the significance of your lessons and that you would not be where you are today without them. You begin to manifest your gifts in a tangible form, become comfortable with yourself.
5. The Soul Sessions
This is the phase of healing and growing. The soul is now on its path. You can stay in this phase for a very long time, depending on how soon you discover what is working for you and what is not.
You are creating a new life, one that is in alignment with your true self. You do something, see where it gets you, and depending on how it turns out, recalibrate.
6. The Surrender
This is the stage of release. You are slowly letting go of anything that was residual and has been coming in the way of your spiritual progress.
You now know what is with alignment to your higher self. You have created the lifestyle and built the habits and relationships that support you in this journey. You are now surrendering any remnants– deep-rooted beliefs, fears, and ego.
7. Integration
You realize the meaning of your life. You are connected to the universe and everyone around you. All separation ceases to exist. In this feeling of oneness, you offer your life in service to the world. You become aware of your true self.
It is possible for all of us to experience a spiritual awakening. We can do it by developing a routine around practices that can aid us in this journey, for example, meditation or practicing loving-kindness towards both self and others. All we need is love, faith, and patience.
Closing Thoughts
Ultimately, a spiritual awakening can be a beautiful and enlightening journey that leads to a deeper understanding of yourself, the world around you, and your place within the grand existence. Embrace it with curiosity, humility, and gratitude for the profound gift it offers.
