At Home Yoga Practice Made Easy
Oct 21, 2021Creating an at-home yoga practice can be made easy with a few simple elements in mind:
- Pick Your Yoga Style
- Equipment
- Time
- Space
If you've established a regular yoga practice by attending sessions in a yoga studio or gym, you can continue your progress with an at-home yoga practice.
Sometimes, it is not always convenient to run to your favorite yoga class several times a week, plus the process to develop a consistent yoga practice in the comfort of your own home is easy.
Pick Your Yoga Style
There are so many different styles and disciplines of yoga to practice, but perhaps you have a favorite. Do you enjoy a dynamic flowing practice like a Power Vinyasa Flow that provides a decent sweat and workout? Maybe you prefer something that is dedicated to enhancing your alignment for greater stability and structure in your body. A Yin Yoga practice has probably helped you with feeling more relaxed in your mind and body. Whatever style of yoga you practice, you can do the same at home.
There are many resources that can assist you with your at-home practice: books, social media, and online classes like those offered at Discover Yoga, to name a few. No matter which way you decide to practice yoga at home, subscription-based online classes hosted by established yoga studios and certified instructors can be easily found online.
Equipment
As you know, you do not need to have too many items to practice yoga. Comfortable clothing and a yoga mat are the minimal items you need. It may be worth investing, though, in some other yoga props to enhance your practice. For example, a yoga block, yoga strap, and even a yoga bolster can come in handy. These are tools that will guide you into a deeper yoga connection. For example, a yoga block can be used to bring the floor a little closer to you when you are working on touching the ground in a Standing Forward Fold. A block can also help with balancing poses like Half Moon Pose or add stability when you're practicing Triangle Pose or Side Angle Pose. Likewise, a yoga strap can enhance hamstrings stretches and other extension-type yoga poses.
Time
You can devote as little or as much time to your yoga practice as you'd like when you practice at home. A class taught by an instructor at a yoga studio will often last 60 to 90 minutes. This can give you a very good foundation to create an at-home yoga practice. If you're able to commit to a 60 minute yoga lesson at home, that can be wonderful, but you're certainly not obligated to do that.
A shorter 30-minute class can provide the same benefits as going to a longer class. But if you want to incorporate yoga into a daily routine, but devoting 30 to 60 minutes a day is still not convenient, try an even shorter session. Yes, even a short 5 to 10-minute yoga flows or Mindful Meditations help. Shorter sessions make it easier for you to carve out a bit of time during your busy schedule to incorporate some yoga.
A few minutes of yoga every day can go a long way.
Space
You do not need a whole lot of space for your home yoga practice. A nice clear area to roll out your yoga mat without many obstacles is sufficient. You want to be able to move freely so you can stay in-tuned to your at-home yoga practice. This may be in an open area in your living room or even outside in your backyard.
You can also create a special yoga space for your practice. It could be a small section in your bedroom or a spare room in your home. An in-home yoga studio can carry the positive flavor and essence of what you'd like to create for your yogic journey. You can even decorate your designated yoga space in any way you desire. It may include elements that create a sacred and spiritual energy. Adding soft lighting, candles, incense, tranquil music, and even a small altar will bring life to your yogic area.
Whenever you step into your at-home yoga studio, a feeling of ease and calm will now be associated with your yoga practice. Incorporating some or all of these simple elements will allow you to successfully create a tranquil at home yoga practice.
