5 Mistakes We Make on Our Spiritual Journey
Jul 01, 2022Experiencing a spiritual awakening comes with many benefits and challenges. When we first begin our journey, we quickly realize that we have to distance ourselves from some people and energies that are no longer aligned with who we are.
The most challenging part is having to separate from family members or friends with whom you’ve created meaningful relationships. On top of that, we also become painfully aware of things we’ve done in the past that we’re regretful or embarrassed of.
This can be another reason why we retreat as we make space to protect our energy and learn more, discover and forgive our past selves.
It’s easy to see why becoming more connected to your spiritual self can be overwhelming and filled with new experiences, I want to make sure you avoid some of these common mistakes.
1- Self-Isolation
Naturally, one of the very first steps of beginning your spiritual journey is a period of self-reflection. This normally happens after you realize that the friend groups you used to belong to no longer feel aligned. So it’s natural and recommended that you do remove and protect your energy from that group. But be careful not to become totally isolated. When you retreat and don’t make time or space for community, it can very easily encourage anxiety and depression.
It’s best to find a new community of people who are more aligned with your new personal goals and share similar values. You can find these communities online or by searching on Google in your local area.
2- Not being disciplined
Self-discipline, dare I say, is the single most crucial thing when it comes to developing along your spiritual journey. News Flash -- connection to your highest self takes time, consistency and discipline to master like any other skill or hobby. Life will constantly throw distractions at you and excuses why it makes sense to stay where you are now. Don’t listen to it! Stay consistent with your spiritual practices no matter if that’s Yoga, meditation, journaling, or your morning routine.
We learn the most about ourselves when we do that thing over an extended period of time and that allows us space to see and measure what’s happening. As a result, we can make more informed decisions and have a better idea of what it is we really need.
3- Looking Outside of Yourself for answers
One major mistake we make on our spiritual journey is believing that the answers to who we are and what we represent are outside of ourselves. They’re not. With consistent yoga and meditation practice, we can learn to become more in touch with our intuition and learn the unique and subtle way our body communicates with us. Your body has all the cosmic wisdom it needs. Plus, your spiritual journey aims to learn how to connect to the most authentic YOU! Why would anyone or anything have the answers outside of yourself?
4- Judging Others
After realizing that we no longer belong in certain groups or around certain people, there can be a tendency to judge them and the life journey that they decided to make. Don’t fall into this trap. Could those people be doing things that don’t serve higher or positive energy… sure. But it’s not our place to judge them in any way.
We all have unique life experiences that play a role in who we are and how we experience the world. We have to accept the fact that everyone is on their unique path, and it does not have to align with yours. Plus, the world needs diversity. So embrace who you are, how you’re growing and focus on your own progress. The only competition is yourself.
5- Forgetting it’s a life-long journey
One of the most common mistakes people make is forgetting that spirituality and the journey to their higher self is a life-long process. We are constantly learning more about ourselves as we have new experiences in life, new challenges and flow with the unexpected ups and downs. You may be consistent in your practice for 2 years then something knocks you off your game and you go MIA for 8 months. Don’t sweat it. Life is unpredictable. What matters is that you continue to come back time and time again.
